I had no clue what "Agentic AI" meant three weeks ago

True story. I was scrolling through Twitter — sorry, X, whatever we're calling it now — and every other post was some tech bro dropping "agentic AI" like it was the password to a secret club. VCs throwing the term around. Product Hunt launches with it in every tagline. My LinkedIn feed looked like someone copy-pasted the same buzzword into 400 different posts.

So I did what any normal person would do. I ignored it for a while.

Then my buddy Saad pinged me on Discord. He runs a small dev shop in Lahore and he was like "bro we just replaced two junior devs' worth of ticket work with an agent setup, you need to look into this." And I'm sitting there thinking, okay, if Saad — who's the most skeptical person I know about tech hype — is telling me to pay attention, maybe I should actually figure out what this thing is.

The elevator pitch (without the corporate fluff)

Forget everything you've read on Medium about this. Here's the deal in plain words.

A chatbot waits for you to say something, then it responds. That's it. It's reactive. You're driving, it's just the GPS voice.

An agentic AI system? You tell it "hey, I need you to find all the broken links on our website, fix the ones you can, and send me a report about the ones you can't." And then it... goes and does that. By itself. It opens a browser, crawls your pages, tests links, edits files, and writes you a summary. You go make chai, come back, and the work is done.

That's literally the core concept. AI that takes actions, not just gives answers.

Alright but does this actually work or is it demo magic?

This was my first question too. We've all seen those Twitter demos where everything looks amazing and then you try it yourself and it falls apart in 30 seconds. Remember the AutoGPT hype from like 2023? That thing would run in circles, burn $40 in API credits, and produce nothing useful. I lost money on that experiment and I'm still salty about it.

But here's the thing — the models got significantly better since then. And I don't mean incrementally better, I mean "oh wow this actually follows instructions now" better. The jump from GPT-4 to what we have now with 5.4 is massive for this kind of work. Same with Gemini 3.1. They can hold context over 30+ steps without losing the plot.

I tested this myself last Tuesday. Set up a basic agent using CrewAI, gave it access to a web scraper and a file writer, and told it to research the top 10 password managers and write a comparison table. It took about 12 minutes, hit maybe 20 different websites, and produced a pretty solid first draft. Not perfect — it duplicated one entry and the formatting was janky in spots — but like 80% of the way there? That would've taken me an hour and a half.

Where companies are actually deploying this (not hypotheticals)

I talked to a few people running agents in production. Not the "we're exploring AI" type of companies. Actual deployments that handle real work every day.

Dev teams using agents to triage bugs

My friend's company — 40 person SaaS startup in Toronto — has an agent watching their Sentry error dashboard. When a new error spikes, the agent grabs the stack trace, searches the codebase for related files on GitHub, checks recent commits that might have introduced it, and writes up a summary with a suggested fix. Their on-call engineer said it cut his triage time by about 60%. He still writes the actual fix most of the time, but the "okay what's going on here and where do I even look" phase is basically eliminated.

Customer support that doesn't make you want to scream

You know that experience where you contact support and get bounced between three people and repeat your problem each time? Some companies are replacing that whole flow with agents that have access to the order system, the refund policy, and the email tools. One agent I interacted with as a customer last month pulled up my order, saw it was delayed, offered me a 15% discount or a replacement, processed my choice, and sent the confirmation. Took maybe 90 seconds. I didn't know it was an agent until I saw the follow-up survey.

The boring-but-profitable stuff

Supply chain, inventory management, procurement. Not sexy topics but apparently this is where agentic AI is making companies the most money right now. Agents that watch shipping routes 24/7 and reroute automatically when there's a port delay or a weather event. An agent doesn't get tired at 3am and miss the alert. It just... does the thing.

How this stuff works under the hood (dev version)

I'm not gonna write a tutorial here — there are better resources for that — but if you're a developer trying to wrap your head around the architecture, here's the gist.

You've got your LLM (the brain). GPT-5.4, Gemini, Claude, Llama, whatever. This handles the thinking and decision-making.

Then you've got tools. A "tool" in agent-speak is just a function the LLM can decide to call. Could be a web search function, a database query, an API call, a code executor. You define these, the LLM picks which ones to use based on what it needs.

Memory is the piece most people underestimate. Without proper memory, your agent is like a goldfish with superpowers — incredibly capable but forgets everything every few seconds. You need short-term memory (what's happened in this task so far) and some kind of long-term store (vector DB, usually) for stuff it should remember across sessions.

And then there's the loop itself. The agent reasons about what to do → takes an action → looks at the result → decides what to do next. Repeat until the task is done or it gets stuck. That's called the ReAct pattern and honestly it's simpler than it sounds.

The part that's NOT simple? Safety. You're giving software the ability to take real actions. Delete files. Send emails. Make API calls. If something goes wrong — and it will eventually — the damage is real, not theoretical. So you need permission boundaries, human approval gates for anything destructive, rate limits, and obsessive logging. I cannot stress the logging part enough. When your agent does something weird at 2am, logs are the only way you'll figure out why.

Why now though? Why not last year?

Three reasons, and they all happened to converge around the same time.

One — the models crossed a reliability threshold. Back in 2024, you'd give an LLM a 10-step task and by step 6 it had forgotten what it was doing. Current models maintain coherence across complex multi-step workflows. That single improvement unlocked everything else.

Two — cost per token cratered. Running an agent that makes 200+ LLM calls to complete a single task used to cost like $50. Now it's a couple bucks. When the math works, businesses adopt.

Three — the tooling grew up. LangChain, CrewAI, AutoGen — these frameworks went from "fun weekend project" to "I'd actually deploy this at work" quality. Proper error handling, retry logic, observability built in. That matters.

Also NVIDIA just dropped the Rubin platform which is basically purpose-built hardware for running agent workloads. When the chip company designs silicon specifically for your use case, that's a pretty strong signal.

The uncomfortable conversation

I'd feel dishonest if I didn't talk about the hard stuff.

People are going to lose jobs because of this. Not everyone, and not all at once, but certain roles — especially ones that involve a lot of repetitive cognitive work — are going to shrink. First-line customer support, basic data entry and analysis, routine QA testing, simple code fixes. If an agent can do 80% of a job for 5% of the cost, the economics are brutal.

I don't have a nice answer for this. I don't think anyone does yet. The "people will just move to higher-value work" argument is partially true but it ignores the transition pain. Not everyone can upskill overnight. This is a real issue and pretending otherwise feels irresponsible.

On the technical side — agents hallucinate and then act on hallucinations. A chatbot that makes up a fake statistic is annoying. An agent that makes up a fake statistic and then emails it to your client list is a crisis. This is why guardrails and human oversight aren't optional extras, they're requirements.

Security is another big one. An agent with database access that gets hit with a prompt injection attack could exfiltrate data or corrupt records. Researchers have demonstrated these attacks working. This isn't paranoia, it's a known vulnerability that the industry is still figuring out how to properly defend against.

If you want to get your hands dirty

Here's honestly what I'd tell you if you messaged me asking how to get started.

Go install CrewAI or LangChain. Pick one, doesn't matter which. Build the dumbest agent you can think of. Seriously. Make one that takes a URL, fetches the page, and summarizes it in three bullet points. That's it. Get that working first.

Then add a second tool. Maybe a file writer so it can save the summary to disk. Now your agent can browse AND write files. See how that feels. Notice where it breaks.

Then try giving it a slightly more complex goal. "Summarize the top 5 pages on Hacker News right now and save the summaries to a file." You'll immediately run into issues with error handling, rate limits, and the agent getting confused about what counts as "top." That's the good stuff. That's where you learn.

Don't start by trying to build an autonomous business analyst. You'll get frustrated and quit. Start stupid simple.

And for the love of everything — add logging from day one. Every tool call, every reasoning step. Future you will thank past you when something breaks at 2am.

Where Axonix fits into all of this

I went in cynical and came out convinced. Not convinced that agentic AI will solve world hunger or whatever the VCs are claiming this week. But convinced that it's a real, meaningful shift in how software works.

The ability for code to set goals, pick tools, take actions, evaluate results, and adapt — that's genuinely new. Not "chatbot with extra steps" new. Actually new.

Will the hype cycle be annoying? Oh absolutely. Get ready for every startup to add "agentic" to their landing page. But underneath the noise, something real is happening. And if you build software for a living, you probably want to understand it sooner rather than later.

Don't panic about it. But don't sleep on it either.
